Caitlín R. Kiernan was born near Dublin, Ireland, but has lived most of her life in the southeastern U.S. Trained as a vertebrate paleontologist, she began writing fiction full time in 1992. Her short stories have appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies, and many of them are collected in Candles for Elizabeth (Meisha Merlin Publishing), Tales of Pain and Wonder (Gauntlet Press), From Weird and Distant Shores (coming in 2001 from Subterreanean Press), and Wrong Things (cowritten with Poppy Z. Brite, also coming from Subterranean in 2001). Her first novel, Silk, won the International Horror Guild and Barnes and Noble Maiden Voyage awards for best first novel and was nominated for the Bram Stoker and British Fantasy awards. Caitlín writes DC Comic's The Dreaming, scheduled to end in March 2001 as Caitlín returns to prose full time. Her second novel, Threshold, will be published in the fall of 2001 by Penguin/ ROC. Caitlín lives in Birmingham, Alabama.
