After studying science and law at Cornell, Serviss eventually became a journalist and editorial writer for the New York Sun. When H. G. Wells's The War of the Worlds was serialized in 1898, proper copyright protection was not obtained; Serviss was hired to write a sequel to the story for The New York Journal. The sequel was titled Edison's Conquest of Mars.
