Synopsis:

Returning from a tour in Vietnam, a corpsman (medic) is assigned to a unit coordinating target practice exercises on the island of Kahoolawe in the Hawaiian chain. His unit "battles" a native population of goats during the day, while at night, apparently while dreaming, the right is re-enacted with mythological elements.

Notes:

"Goats" received a rave review in the NY Times Book Review. Part of the anthology IN THE FIELD OF FIRE, edited by Jack Dann and Jeanne Van Buren Dann, hc and tp 1987, mass market paperback 1988. The anthology contains stories mixing the genres of Vietnam War fiction with science fiction and fantasy.
